Like all national cuisine, Portuguese sweets are quite rich, and the Christmas season is no exception. There are many sweets consumed at Christmas time, some more traditional than others, and the most popular is undoubtedly the King's Cake.
The name could not be more appropriate. This delicacy takes center stage on the Christmas sweets table. Originating in Louis XIV's France, the Gâteau des Rois (Kings' Cake) celebrated New Year's Eve and Epiphany, and was brought to Portugal in the second half of the 19th century by Baltazar Rodrigues Castanheiro Júnior, heir to the founder of Confeitaria Nacional, the first house to make the cake in Portugal. Its name originally alluded to the Three Wise Men and its composition refers to the gifts they gave to the Baby Jesus: the golden tone of the crust symbolizes gold, the aroma, incense, and the fruits, myrrh.
